Why does my home’s safety switch (RCD) keep tripping?2019-01-28T13:26:57+13:00

It could be a faulty appliance. To find the culprit, unplug all your electrical appliances (particularly the fridge, air conditioners, dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer) and reset the circuit breaker. Then, plug the appliances back in and switch them on one at a time until you can identify the problem. If you can’t reset the breaker, call CommElec on 027 212 1161 for advice.

How does and electrical safety switch save lives?2019-01-28T13:27:31+13:00

On a normal power circuit, the current flowing to an appliance returns through the neutral wire. If the circuit is compromised, the electricity can leak to earth through a person in contact with the appliance, causing death or serious injury.

A safety switch detects the loss of power from the circuit, and cuts the supply of electricity in as little as 30 milliseconds – 0.003 seconds. Importantly, this response time is faster than the critical section of a heartbeat, and therefore significantly reduces the risk of death or serious injury.

CommElec recommends that you should have an electrical inspection carried out if:

    • You are purchasing a property that has been occupied
    • The property is more than 25 years old
    • If it is more than 5 years since one has been done
    • If you are concerned about how any of the equipment may have been installed

Yes! Talk to one of our contractors in the planning stages of your renovation. We can advise you on when power will need to be switched off or pulled out, book in electrical work to fit in with your builder’s schedule and order any special electrical fittings ahead of time.

Absolutely! Again, if you’re planning a major renovation or wiring change for your home, we strongly suggest kicking it off with a site inspection by one of our experienced electricians.

Yes, incorrectly installed ceiling insulation can be a hazard. CommElec’s trained and licensed electricians can inspect your home to ensure the correct clearances have been left around light-fittings, and heat guards installed around down lights.
